The beauty of breaking6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Michele Harper’s memoir challenges this one-dimensional portrait of physicians by excavating her own personal history, holding it up to the light, and pushing her readers to do the same. Though we tend to the vulnerable night and day, we physicians must find ways to suppress our own humanity and vulnerability while on the job. Yet I am keenly aware that my own humanity, in all of its beauty and brokenness, is not allowed in the rooms where I minister to patients and teach my colleagues how to balance a respect for personhood with invasive, painful ways of treating illness with medications and machines. As a writer and a palliative medicine physician myself, I help patients retain their humanity by helping them to articulate what matters most to them in the face of illness and death. We are chastised for being robotic or standoffish, yet our professionalism might be questioned if we cry in front of a colleague or patient. We are both expected to play God and admonished for thinking we are God. ![]() Doctors inhabit a strange place in American society. ![]()

Full tilt emma scott book review6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I’d never stood this close to Theo before. Theo slung my arms around his neck, then put his hands on my hips, and began to move. Some, driven by the sultry tones of the song and the singer’s smoky voice, were grinding their hips together, thighs intertwined. Theo took my hand in his and led me to the small dance floor, where a dozen other couples were swaying to the music. It wasn’t a request, and my traitorous body was already rising to its feet before I could think. It dialed into my already aching body, filling me with a need to be touched.Ī shadow fell over me, and I looked up to see Theo standing, his hand outstretched. But the damn music was bluesy, sexy… A slow burn of want and longing. I concentrated on the music, pretending to listen and resolutely not looking at Theo. A deadly education series book 36/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Her new schedule has her starting the day in a type of study hall/homeroom, which she inexplicably shares with a group of freshmen. She and her friends, most especially Orion Lake, have repaired the cleansing equipment in the graduation hall, which means that for a few glorious days they will have at least a little peace from the largest and most deadly of the maleficaria, the child-eating monsters that roam the academy’s halls gobbling up the unwary.Įl is going to need that advantage. ![]() Because the books tell one long story, this review contains spoilers for the previous novel – A Deadly Education – pretty much from the first sentence on.Įl Higgins has successfully reached her senior year, not an easy feat in a school where a good percentage of kids don’t survive to commencement. Sci-fi/fantasy novels are often written to be read in sequential order and The Last Graduate is no exception. ![]()

The incal jodorowsky6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() I realized it was I myself who had fed my terrors. I woke up for a few seconds, then peacefully went back to sleep. At the climax of the dream, in a state of lucid terror, I said, “Enough, I will stop wanting to wake up! Abomination, destroy me!” The entity approached threateningly. Now, tired of this undignified flight, I decided to offer myself in sacrifice. I would wake up screaming and soaked in sweat. I must confront the terrible images and transform them.” I often had the same nightmare: I was in a desert, and a psychic entity determined to destroy me would come from the horizon as a huge cloud of negativity. These monsters are aspects of me that have not been resolved. The dreams happen in me they are part of me. I repeated many times, like a litany, “It is I who dream, just as it is I who am awake, and not a perverse and vulnerable child. ![]() Here, I was a character inferior to my level of consciousness in the real world, capable of misdeeds that I would never have allowed myself to perpetrate while awake. “I had to first overcome the nightmares: my dreams were populated by menaces, shadows, murderous persecutions, disgusting events and objects, ambiguous sexual relations that excited me while also making me feel guilty. ![]()

The Green Phoenix by Alice Poon6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() All “Wuxia” fiction shares some or all of these themes: knight-errant righteousness, brotherhood loyalty, resistance to tyrannical regimes, chivalric benevolence, and altruistic ideals. Books that belong in this genre are mostly categorized under “Asian Myth & Legend Fantasy” and/or “Action & Adventure Fantasy”.Īs for the definition, I’d say the “Wuxia” genre is specific to Chinese culture and literature that dates back to at least the Tang dynasty (600-900AD) and has these three traditional hallmarks: (1) it has ancient historical settings (2) the main characters are martial artists with superb kung fu skills (3) the main plot is about violent conflicts. If you look at the Amazon book categories, you won’t find such a genre. ![]() Presently in the English-language mainstream book market, the “Wuxia” genre doesn’t exist. Today we are accompanied by Alice Poon, author of The Heavenly Sword, who also has published historical fiction.ġ.- How would you define the wuxia genre? And the xianxia? Welcome to my favourite section of the site, being able to talk with the authors. ![]() |
